Westland History In 1827, the land which is now Westland, Livonia, Garden City, Inkster, Wayne, Dearborn, Dearborn Heights, and Redford Township became Bucklin Township. Two years later in 1829, BucklinTownship was divided into Lima and Pekin Townships. Lima Township was quickly changed to Nankin Township because early postal regulations said no two counties/townships could be named the same. In 1835, however, Livonia Township split from Nankin Township, which at that time included the area we recognize today as Westland, Wayne, Garden City and Inkster. During the early 1960s, the city of Livonia wanted to annex the part of Nankin in which a large shopping mall, Westland shopping center was to be built. The shopping center eventually opened in 1965, joining Northland and Eastland malls in other Detroit Metro cities. In reaction to Livonia's annexation attempts, the people of Nankin voted to change the remainder of the township to a city. Westland, Michigan became a city on May 11,1966.
Nankin Mill (taken from the township name of Nankin) was originally built in 1863. Henry Ford used the mill in 1920's as part of the Ford Motor Company's village industries.
