Plymouth is a town that is close to M-14, I-96, & I-275. Located in the western suburbs of Detroit this makes it easy to get to downtown Detroit, the airport, and Ann Arbor. It is about 20 minutes from either Ann Arbor or Detroit, right dead center between them. Plymouth has a quaint downtown with a central park, lots of restaurants, and neat shops. It has plenty of old time town atmosphere. Downtown town Plymouth has about every type of restaurant that you could want (from bar burgers to Irish pub, to higher end Italian or steak places. Plymouth History Plymouth Mi was first settled in 1825 and became a city in 1932. The railroad station was built in 1871. Plymouth is one of the few spots in Michigan where train tracks went north, south, east, and wet. The city was named for it's historical ties to Plymouth Massachusetts. Many of the settlers in Plymouth, Mi came from Plymouth Massachusetts. Plymouth almost was named "Leroy". Plymouth has been a hub of Michigan industry. There has been a soap factory, cigar making factory, spring water sales, and the most famous "the daisy bb gun". The average household size was 2.04 and the average family size was 2.81.
In the city the population was spread out with 18.7% under the age of 18, 5.8% from 18 to 24, 37.5% from 25 to 44, 21.7% from 45 to 64, and 16.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females there were 88.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 85.4 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $51,535, and the median income for a family was $76,369. Males had a median income of $52,188 versus $37,113 for females. Plymouth was built where three Potawatomi Indian trails converged at the Rouge River. The first settlers arrive in 1825, and named the township in honor of the first American settlement at Plymouth Rock where some of them had lived. Attracted by the land act of 1820, which made property available at $1.25 an acre, the first settlers arrived here in 1824. The first home was built in what is now the city in 1825. The first purchaser, Alanson Aldrich did not settle on his new property, nor did the second purchaser, Abraham Spears. The third person to purchase property within Plymouth Township city limits, was Erastus Hussey. He did settle on his land, however, not until the year 1826. The first actual people to settle in Plymouth Township, were Allen and William Tibbets. They had bought 800 acres of land and settled on them, in the latter part of 1824. Other soon joined, but it wasn't until the Spring of 1825, that a sufficient number of settlers formed a real community.
It was George Starkweather, the first child born to settlers in present Plymouth Township, who later in 1871 recognized the importance of a railroad to a community and decided that the North Village of Plymouth would become the new center of town. He built a new store on the corner of Liberty and Starkweather and opened a road through his property for other new stores to locate. This area is presently known as "Old Village" or "Lowertown."
Plymouth Township was organized in 1827, and the village incorporated in 1867.
From the turn of the century until 1958 Plymouth was the air rifle capital of the world. More bb guns were manufactured here than anywhere else during those years.
